Liberalism is a parasitic ideology that subordinates any well meaning compassion of the privileged to the interests of murderous empire. It protects the greed of the rich under the aegis of Freedom, whitewashing the fact that most of the world lives as their slaves. It protects the capitalist state monopoly on violence as Justice, ignoring that the state will always excuse itself from its own laws without consequence should they inconvenience it in the slightest. It shelters bigots and propagandists under Free Speech while the oppressed remain voiceless, deceptively conflating the right to speak with the power to be heard.
These things, Freedom, Justice, Free Speech, and others, we are all taught from our earliest years to believe are the holiest ideals. The faith westerners place in them serves to stifle meaningful opposition and prop up an endless campaign of rape, torture, and desolation. And we are taught to feel righteous as we do so, and nothing offends us more than to have these foundational assumptions challenged.
In this sense neo-liberalism is simply referring to the current wave of empire apologists, liberalism is always recreating itself anew but ultimately the same in every generation: draining the effectiveness out of every tentative revolt against empire and redirecting it towards the needs of empire. The hippies were liberals, punks were liberals, the early computer club hackers who got cushy intelligence jobs were liberals, ted talk watchers are liberals, most feminist and queer theorists in academia are liberals, Occupy scrubs are liberals, politics bloggers and the twitterati cheerleaders of the new imperialism are liberals, contemporary hacktivists are liberals (voluntarily doing cointelpro work without even having the sense to get paid!) All marching under a banner of misguided compassion too cowardly to take an honest look at itself and the true fruits of its actions. And always, always, students are liberals.
