In the RYM theory of imperialism, exploitation did not occur in capitalist America. As RYM put it, "it is the oppressed peoples ['of the rest of the world'] who have created the wealth of this empire." Wealth was created offshore, in the third world--not by the American working class. This fatal blind spot pervaded the RYM theory of oppression and privilege.

lol.  I guess it arrives at a decent conclusion at the end but it's mostly like Boy howdy Americans ARE oppressed and Americans need more and did you know identity politics were invented by Stalinists?

Well is it wrong? Or do you just find the conclusion ideologically distasteful? "Stalinists" and Maoists of today aren't the ones of the 60's, and the whole point of the article is how that rhetoric eventually morphed into the liberal privilege theory that atomizes the left today.

I agree that the use of Stalinist in and of itself is distasteful as its essentially a meaningless slur but they seem to mostly be talking about the Maoists and such who began placing more emphasis on examining capitalism through the lens of race and nation rather than or in addition to class, which in and of itself is not a completely destructive project, but again its been mutated by this point. I need to sit down and read it in more depth but that makes a lot of sense and is well argued, and its not like this is the first place anyone's took notice of that.

i got tired of reqading it because it was long and the first 1/3 of it was throwing out all kinds of acronyms and crying about american workers and saying it's wrong to say americans are enriched by the third world.  basically, socialistworker trot type stuff, i felt.  since i got tired of reading it i dont really know what it goes on to say that well, if its thesis is that identity politics are being used to divide the proletarian class then thats pretty good.

Oh yeah they're Trots. Again I have to read it more but if they're saying its not really a good organizing tactic, I don't disagree with that. If they're saying American workers are not benficiaries of imperialism in an absolute rather than rhetorical sense then obv that's retarded.

jon is being annoying throwing around the word "gulag" like a clown.  also the quotation he's using is irrelevant because this article is talking about a movement from the 1960s lol.  there were lots of full out battles between striking workers and armed thugs hired by ownership in the old days and it is shocking and crazy but it has nothing to do with this

and the point still stands... there was tremendous wealth that was built on the backs of oppressed labour in America. by the way the article describes, it seems RYM ignored a lot of its own history. by the way, it sounds like you need a bit of time in the gulag.
