users should have control over their own account.

not hard to do, just need to change user privileges.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but deleting one's own account on a forum is not standard functionality. Even if you can technically delete the account, your posts would remain (otherwise you disrupt the logical flow of every thread you ever posted it), meaning your name & content is still going to be out there, so what's the point? Giving every user the right to turn the forum into swiss cheese every time they get huffy and want to make a dramatic exit is just bad policy.

From my experience using this exact some forum for another purpose, when you delete someone's account it keeps their postings. Just removes their personal profile.

yea no, this shouldn't be an option. having the ability to delete your own posts is sufficient. equinox is just looking for attention and has had a mental breakdown probably.

whats the big deal anyway?

it all depends on what "deleting ones account" means.
  • if its deleting all account content (posts and threads) then no, it would be bad for the forum. swiss cheese analogy etc.
  • if its deleting the account only, leaving the content, then i say it should be allowed. Lets play the devils advocate here and ask you the same question - whats the difference to you if some1 stops logging or just officially deletes his account (which wouldnt be used anyway)? Maybe some people need this kind of symbolic act of "closure".

As for "what if somebody is ultra retarded and deletes his account n after a couple of days wants to come back" arguments - Volenti non fit iniuria.

Im fine with it being allowed, it's just not that important.  I would recommend the individual against deleting their own account because then someone will steal their name, and then they'll end up complaining.  But if they want to I dont have a problem with it.  If the forum doesn't have the capability to allow it, I dont think that's a problem.  If it does, then fine I guess, w/e.
