Cuba also evacuates people into caves that Fidel built to defend against American invaders. The low death toll is incredible considering they probably haven't built a new house since the 1960s. I am going to visit in December.

@woofy no I don't live in Miami anymore, but my family does. They're doing OK, just lost power and had a tree across the street come down onto the neighbor's house, but they seem fine just have a bit of roof damage. Thx for your concern buddy

just power out for a week! the storm itself wasn't too bad in this area

They the only country in the western world where all the cars are from the 60s and 50s.

great point re cuba preparedness too! in USA the government says "okay yeah, you guys should probably evacuate" then sits back while people just scatter like cockroaches. no planning/infrastructure to evacuate or house evacuees, so people end up gridlocked & stranded out of gas on the interstates, or pay sky high airfare on limited flights then get stranded at airports anyway when flights end up grounded, and that's assuming they're not just stuck at home because they're physically or financially unable to travel.

They scuttled a law in florida that would have required nursing homes to have back up generators for AC, because the businesses wanted to save some money.  9 people died in the heat after irma.
