I'm a manager who is hiring for someone for a front-line customer-service related position. We're paying 12-13/hour (Canadian). So it's not like some amazing job.
In the week we've had our position open, I've received in the range of 200 resumes. It's heartbreaking. So many people, recent immigrants, people who had careers and have been laid off, just looking for a full time job, anywhere. I have one job I can give, so I have to pass over so many people who are just trying to make ends meet, and every time I close a resume knowing I'm not going to hire someone, it hurts. One candidate had major professional experience in his home country, and recently has only been able to find part time employment in fast food.
I can't believe we have so many people so desperate to just do anything to be able to support themselves and their family, and yet such great resistance to something that could make this an issue of the past. We have enough as a society! We just need to act! A basic income could solve so many problems! Allow the labour market to actually work as a free market, while ensuring we have a safety net for people unable to find work.
... I just don't understand the resistance ...
