i think it's ironic as fuck that the inspiration for advocates of "free" markets and capitalists would probably be  a socialist today.

If you're talking about Smith then that quote isn't meant in a "this is bad" kind of way, its a simple statement of fact and one that Smith and others of his social stature at the time would have agreed is a good thing.

It's like we would read that quote now and we automatically add "...and that's a bad thing" to the end because even modern liberals think being blatantly undemocratic is a bad thing, even if it interferes with capitalism. But at the time Smith and his peers would have automatically added "...and that's a good thing."
