Say fundamental changes happen over a very short period of time that result in the entire reconstruction of our system from what it is now into a socialist economy. What happens to the capitalists' wealth? I imagine many will begin finding ways to trade their money for foreign currencies, or liquidate their assets in the U.S. and invest elsewhere.

the wealth gets redistributed to the labour that initially created that wealth. but socialism doesn't work unless it's global , it can't be confined to a single state as efficiently.

incidentally, it's quite odd watching people drool lovingly over capitalism, a system that works to keep the majority of the world's wealth in the hands of a few. it's really deranged.
