The new bnet version does have multiplayer support, they only got a bug currently. They forgot to add the global server to the registry, that's why you see the old non-working servers in the list. If you add the registry key manually it'll work. (if you got the GOG version installed, it'll work too)
The Create/join buttons are disabled if your port isn't forwarded, but this isn't a bug (it was always like this on bnet). You can just install the widescreen patch and both buttons will be unlocked (even without having the port forwarded).
Also, some good news about their new release: The official bnet server DOES NOT require a legit cd-key anymore. They've removed the cd-key check. That means, everyone who buys their game gets the same dummy cd-key set into the registry. The server is pretty much free to use now, multiple users can now connect using the same cd-key at the same time (there is no more "cd-key is in use by XYZ" message)
