help removing linux mint

So my laptop (Toshiba Satellite Windows 10) was giving me issues a while back.. I tried doing a factory reset. It didn't work (see the error code in the image posted)... said it was missing drivers or w/e to properly reformat windows. So i essentially was fucked. So now i've been running around the last couple weeks trying to figure out how to get windows back on the laptop

my first idea was to get linux on the laptop, download windows 10, put it on a thumb drive, and boot a "stable" version of windows 10 up like that .. well linux blows balls and i think the version of linux i have is shitty also and i cant download/install shit for it .. so that didnt work.

Now i have a new laptop with windows 10, and a product key to go along with it .. So i feel like now i just have to download windows 10 on the NEW laptop and put it on a thumb drive, remove linux mint on the OLD laptop (toshiba) and then i should be able to put windows 10 back on the OLD laptop... just like it was before... and everything will be right as rain... i think

anyone got some time to help me with this ?  ... via phone or teamviewer or whatever (if i can ever get teamviewer on this POS linux) .. something.. need help.

The SS you have attached is saying that it can't find the kernel. This is like saying someone can't walk because their brain is missing. It's a more basic problem than drivers. Drivers is more like: you can't walk because your brain can't talk to your legs.

That being said it is likely that drivers will be the issue if you try to install windows. Generally laptops are produced with propritary hardware - i.e. the MOBO, sound, video, wifi, camera, drives and everything else is manufactured specifically by Toshiba in a specific way for that product, so even if they use chips from other manufacturers (nVidea or whoever) you still need the specific Toshiba drivers for that model to use it.

The catch here is that Toshiba don't release their drivers. You get disks to re-install when you buy your laptop, but if you don't have the disks, you're screwed. This increases the sales of laptops, and also discourages people from stealing them.

As Linux is open-source, people have written drivers for many common laptop components for Linux, so you can install it on just about anything. Windows has always relied on libraries of drivers provided to them by hardware manufacturers, and that generally doesn't include product specific laptop drivers.

Perhaps if you install Win10 on the satellite it will work - IDK about Windows 10 (don't use it, don't want to), but in the past this wasn't possible - or perhaps it might install but with low-res generic graphics and some things not working, like wifi etc.

There is a website around that keeps a library of laptop install disks and will ship them to you for $$. Which is an option. Does the sat-10 have a CD-Drive? If not you will need to install via a USB.

In the end it's possible, but I really think your best option is to put on your big-boy pants and learn to use Linux. The biggest problem I see is that you say it can't install updates. Why? Can you get online at all? If you can't that's a problem, but if you can then I am surprised - the update system is central to modern Linux installations. If you are having trouble with Mint, perhaps try Lubuntu which is a pretty user friendly for noobs Linux release.

lol sorry man i was talking  to tupac  ..he is back on  just yell at him...from what i seen u want wine..it sets up everything like windows directories when the windows programs installs to it.

That's the problem I can't figure out how to do either one right now. The version of Linux on there is either corrupt and I can't download or install hardly anything properly or I'm just a dumbass and can't figure it out. Both are likely. And I don't know how to get Windows 10 back on it

u want to get the live -----> that side of page and put it to usb and also go to your pc bios or press the key* to show what to boot from before your pc loads anything

^u can download images from this also just go with the newest as i cant rec what is better since my version is 12.

and theres a option on it that can write the os directly to drive if u want to keep it/or just keep it usb 3.0 (hopefully) for a backup os etc....i think if u get war2 running ud forget about 10 pretty quick..

if wine doesnt do war2 on it we will hook u up with oracle vbox and ill give you my win2000 image that indeeds plays war2

well if u still have 10 do the recover option idk lots of ways we can give u a dam os.

Sometimes you see the System Recovery Options window. The tools you find available can be used to help fix the main Windows volume (drive C), access special utilities, or even restore the PC from a backup. Another way to use the recovery partition is to choose the Repair Your Computer option from the F8 boot menu.

oh :0 read lambs..yeah if they dont release the drivers thats is a scam! thats why linux suprised me i was expecting to load drivers.

im getting the 32bit net install just to try out in my vm to see if i can get war2 going.im gonna be nooby as hell forgot all the su shit so if i can doit anyone can!

idk if the net install is a good way but it should turn on your laptops wifi so it can download the needed files but im not sure if they are specific to what machines so idk.
i would test on my desktop but i got a known wireless adapter thats a bitch.

if u got another machine play around in oracle.

Yeah fedora is good. Didn't feel very windosey last time I installed it but that was about 4 or 5 years ago, it's probably much more friendly by now.

Some manufacturers are now shipping laptops with the install files all on a seperate (usually hidden) partition on the HDD. I reinstalled a newish HP laptop for a friend a few months ago which was like this. It was just a matter of holding ALT-F6 or ALT-F8 or something like that on boot (can't remember I just googled it) then it wanted to check a valid microsoft account (hotmail, live.com etc.) online and reinstalled. This won't help if you have repartitioned or fully formatted your drive, although it could still work if you have only formatted the existing c:\ partition.

My own laptop is also a Toshiba Satellite - older model, i think about 2010. It definately needs the recovery CDs to reinstall (3 or 4 disks from memory). Perhaps Toshiba are now providing HDD recovery partitions also IDK, but I assumed tk would have already googled "reinstall my laptop model XXXX" and that this wasn't an option.

Linux net installs are usually fine, although not necessarily fast. They automatically pull required components from a whole heap of online repositories that each have many mirror sites, generally they're not too bad although an online install means literally thousands of individual files being downloaded, unpacked and installed.

Personally I prefer to download an install disk image and get a full install to start with, then when you boot and update they will always download and install few new versions anyway as things are constantly being updated. Most distros have their install disks available as torrents which is often the fastest way to download them.

Yeah some are much more troublesome than others. It depends on the brand of chipset inside the adapter more than the brand of the adapter itself. If you have a choice buy a cheap ass adapter and it is much more likely to be supported.

BTW if anyone is interesed my old satellite did have a small hidden "recovery" partition on the original drive. It was <100MB of stuff ... things like factory diagnostic apps etc. I assume this was to make it easy for them to do an autopsy is any were returned under warranty.

This didn't however contain the install files needed to do a recovery. These were on the main partition - it prompted me to insert blank disks and create the recovery set when it was first booted up.

If anyone has an older laptop that is still working but doesn't have the recovery (AKA rescue) disks I would reccomend looking around in the menus to see if you can find an option to create these BEFORE your laptop dies
