So you are intending to make a mod too? What you planning exactly?

First I want to test the viability of a core concept of the mod, which is some units having a hit-and-run role. They would be ranged units with high speed that could shoot at enemies and run away before being killed. If this turns out to work in playtesting, I would proceed to develop the mod further. This is why I want to start by experimenting with unit speeds.

The question is too open. What type of modding are you looking for?

I'd like to modify existing units, and eventually add a couple new units and buildings. Ultimately I want to make a version that is dynamically balanced so that Alliance and Horde are more different from each other. I realize that starting from 0 that is a big project, so we'll see how it goes.

the best version is from this russian community, in https://en.war2.ru War2 Combat Edition

This is the only version that allows big modding capabilities compared to the very limited ways it had prior to 2020.

Good to know. Thank you, and thanks to Mistral as well.

Hey all. I'm picking up the game again after more than 20 years I'm not sure how to get started modding--I don't even know what version of the game I should have. Right now I have the GOG version. I have Windows 10, do I need a different version of that?

Specific things I'm interested in as I get started are changing unit speeds and attack cooldowns, two things you can't do in the map editor.
