https://www.facebook.com/War2TidesOfDarkness/ (https://www.facebook.com/War2TidesOfDarkness/)
Me and burnt have used it before with quite a bit of success. It appears Tora and Smeagol have recently been using it with success as well.
It's a tool to advertise for the server, which means it costs money... The name of the game is:
1) Create an eye-catching facebook post (including Warcraft II logo helps)
2) Post it on the https://www.facebook.com/War2TidesOfDarkness/ (https://www.facebook.com/War2TidesOfDarkness/) page
3) "Boost" the post... basically spend "X" amount of dollars and facebook will more or less spam it on people's facebook page so they Click, Like, and Share it
The #1 goal when boosting a post is selecting a specific target audience so your post has the most success.
I personally targeted males on facebook between the ages 13-45. I targeted geographic locations where war2 players already exist, but believed it would be more successful in developing countries where the idea of a FREE game would be more appealing. I also targeted people who already have "liked" the Warcraft 2 facebook page already (17,000 people as of now) and other RTS games (starcraft, age of empires, command & conquer) Now would be an amazing time to target people who have "Liked" Warcraft the movie (800,000+ people) and it will probably become an even better target the closer it gets to the movie being released to theaters .. people are going to want to see what the movie is about and try to connect with it in any way they can
I also think it's better to spend more money on 1 good advertisement than little chunks of money on multiple advertisements.
So, if anyone wants access to https://www.facebook.com/War2TidesOfDarkness/ (https://www.facebook.com/War2TidesOfDarkness/) with the idea that they are going to create a well designed and well planned post to "boost"(advertise), don't hesitate to ask.
just understand that posting things on the page itself without boosting them has little to no effect. It's an advertising tool that will cost $$ to utilize correctly.
-
For Tora and Smeagol .. if you two continue to use it, I would recommend saving some money for a few weeks so you can throw one big chunk of cash at it at one time.
Me and Burnt boosted 5-6 posts in the past and each one we probably spent $100 or so on, and spaced them out over a few weeks. It had success, but only temporarily. There were not enough new players logging on to sustain themselves. The existing community and lack of administrative support basically reversed any progress we made within a month or two. Most of the new players left within a matter of days or even hours.
If people are interested in this, i'd suggest multiple people chipping in on one solid advertisement, and throwing like $400+ at an ad that runs for maybe 3-4 days (Thursday-Sunday would be prime for gaming days) .. and then maybe one other ad for like $100 and set it up to run for 2 weeks or so immediately following the "Big" ad.
Basically get a large rush of players and target one specific weekend and another smaller ad to help build on the players who stick around for more than a day or two.
-
if you're not willing or able to invest more than a couple hundred dollars towards it, it's just a waste of $$ in my opinion (based on past experiences)
I did have quite a bit of success targeting Brazil. I'm not sure why that is ... but there was an obvious increase of players from brazil immediately following the boosted posts targeting that location
-
I might give it a shot and see how it goes. How much is a decent adv run?
-
here's just an example if i boosted this particular post for $60 bucks and targeted like 8 different countries with men 13-45 who had an interest in warcraft, command and conquer, and age of impires

you can change the intersts, ages, include females, change countries... lots of stuff to increase the amount of people "reached"
-
you can boost for as little as $1

welp.. smeagol had a mental breakdown last night and started posting dumb shit on the war2 advertising page.
apologies to anyone who had to witness it.

He's been banned from the forums for the last week about. Since he can't post here maybe we can stop talking about him.

Yeah it's probably better to talk about ways we can actually better this game rather than talk about smeagol.
TK are you active at all on ur facebook page?
-
I don't mind throwing some cash at it provided i'm not the only one.
You said about $400 would be good about how much have you raised so far?
-

on my personal facebook page yeah .. i dont do much to the war2 advertising page any more
-
i havent raised any .. i lost hope after playing those 2 weeks and saw how dead things were.
and like i said i dont really want to spend my own money on something i have no control over how things are ran
if others want to, or if u do being admin you're more than welcome to use the page tho

Not a wise choice [emoji23], it may be better if you took your cash to Vegas or Atlantic City.

Gambling is pretty dumb. I know a guy who got deep in debt with the Hell's Angels from gambling. Anyway, it's cool of tk to share this page with people who want to help although my god does anyone get tired of hearing the constant updates about how dead the game supposedly is?

I am guessing you were that guy who lost everything in one night of gambling and was forced to hitchhike home in nothing but his underwear. [emoji54]

No, I don't gamble.

Do you gamble Ryu?

I'd get tired of it too if I were #2 in charge of a dying community .. like "shit.. I wish people would stop bring this up.. why can't they just pretend like its not my fault at all for the sake of my feelings"
U remind me of my brother in law26 years old no job still living at home.. he sets so mad when we ride his ass. Like he doesn't get we wouldn't be riding his ass if he stepped up to the plate and handled his responsibilities
-
Why can't Blid just be admin, do very little.. and everyone be OK with it?
Life's not fair
-
it's more like anyone who logs on the server is already aware of how dead or not dead it is, and the constant hand-wringing about how it's dead or deader than ever or will be dead in short order accomplishes nothing but discouragement & negativity for the people playing or working on projects for the server. i get it, you played for 2 weeks and were shocked SHOCKED by how dead it is. i knew that was your opinion before you even played for those 2 weeks actually.
-
The only reason say anything about it is because they are indirectly as polite as possible saying "hey Blid.. il.. u guys are in charge of this shit right..? Gonna do anything about it..? Yes? No?"
-
And ur just over here like "why does admin have to do it.. why can't people who have no control over the server donate their hard earned money to do it"
-
Do you gamble Ryu?
Sure.
Your from NY, don't tell me you have never been down to Atlantic City.....

No, I don't gamble.
Seriously? Come on, you must be putting that lawyer salary somewhere...it can't be all allocated to the server.

You need to spend the advertising money on real hardcore gamers if you want them to stick around, eg) on gaming sites/forum.

Well we had this discussion before...some "hardcore" gaming sites may not endorse or even allow advertising of a modified war2 client run on a private server since blizzard has not really endorsed it. [emoji54]

we already tried the facebook thing and it failed. the new players were all gone within a week, and most of the ones who downloaded the game probably only played single player. but if people like flushing money down the drain, by all means continue.
-
I kinda gotta side with Ryu on this one.
Cause i already sent out a bunch of emails to quite a few popular online gaming platforms.
And none of them took a bite.
-
The bare minimum to do before advertising would be to fix it color bug with windows 8/10. with windows 10 being free, I am sure the vast majority of people now use it or 8 and nobody is going to play a game with messed up colors = instant uninstall.

I think tons of people still use Win7 but yeah it's pretty important to get the client to install cleanly in Win8/10. I'm still sort of confused about how it looks on those OS, afaik the chat is sort of messed but the game runs okay?

Not saying you shouldn't do it, just pointing out the obvious risks. And yes this server is a money pit with low returns.

There are major issues with the chat lobby...1) no icons, 2) if you accidentally click a persons profile...your screen will be messed up...only fix I noticed was to close client which is difficult since you can't see what you type. /quit function comes in handy. 3) text overlay
Game play is ok, I haven't noticed any issues so far.
Tons of people still use 7 but that won't last forever since new PCs are shipping in 10 now. At some point, 7 will only be available as select buys in select locations to select customers. Most end users will be limited to 10. So probably best to start now in seeing how to fix the issues.

Windows 8/10 the color bug makes the lobby pretty much unfunctional.
-
the problems i experience with windows 10 were the same i experienced with windows 8.1 except windows 10 will not scale to full screen. black bars on each side of the screen.

Did you check your Gfx panel about that? It's a laptop correct? What Gfx card do you have in it.
