As per the will of the masses, any player-hosted tourney can now award a custom client tag (aka "icon") to tourney winners. Here are the guidelines:

Tourney guidelines

it should be said that the icon tournament should:

1. have an icon prepared beforehand and previewed (you must make it yourself)
2. be advertised at least 2 days before it takes place
3. be advertised as an icon tournament
4. allow every player to participate

so there will be no abuse, like: not allowing good players to win an icon for oneself, not adveritsing the tournament and have 1 or 2 other people in it to get the icon for oneself etc

Custom client tag guidelines

You must provide the icon you want to use. Icons must be:

- 28x14px in size
- decent quality, not blurry, not slapdash, not thrown together in paint in 10 seconds
- not obscene/offensive
- any regular file format, e.g. .png, .bmp, .gif (avoid saving .jpg from Paint as it will usually degrade quality)

You can make your own icons easily in paint. Don't try to downsize a regular image to 28x14, it looks like garbage. Icons should ideally be pixel art, which will still look nice when you zoom way in on them. Here's a blurry icon compared to a pixel art icon:

Using Paint to make icons

Set your canvas size (28x14) then zoom all the way in and use the pencil tool on the smallest size to draw pixel by pixel. Copy/pasting regular images is bad because they end up really blurry. WC2 unit art works well though since it's also pixel art.

If you want to use any of tupac's or war2.me's custom icons pictured above, that's fine too, as long as they aren't claimed by a previous tourney.

Server.War2.ru / Brainstorming new support section for website
« on: April 10, 2015, 07:07:15 PM »
I'm going to be optimizing the support section of the website, and I'm trying to break it down by the top issues that users encounter over and over again.

- Installation? Maybe a walkthrough of all the installation options? There's like eight pages of settings you have to click through.

- Connecting to the server. A couple issues I can think of are 1) you try to connect and it instantly kicks you back out, 2) the udp packet error where you can connect but not play. 3) Missing server gateways

- Color/display issues. Info about why colors are screwed up, how to fix? (Killing explorer.exe is really the only way?) Link to Naproxen color fix file. Maybe info about why the screen is messed up in Win8?

- Hosting. Standard port fowarding guide, including the changing default game data port guide. This is still relevant, right? What percentage of users does combat v4 fix hosting for btw?

- Taking screenshots? Should this be part of the support section? e.g. info about disabling UAC or installing in c:\ instead of program files, where to upload, etc.

- Freezing? This seems like a semi-common problem, but there isn't currently a solution. Should it be included?

- In-game lag? Should there be a general explanation of why certain games lag? Explanation of conflict? Description of the "hosting trick" (I forget exactly what that was useful for)?

What else?

Tournaments & Leagues / Share your thoughts on the new Tournies board
« on: April 05, 2015, 06:58:02 PM »
There have been several suggestions to add a board dedicated to tournies, tourney announcements, and other tourney-related activities, so that board has been created. However, there are different ideas about the best way to use this board.

  • Should all info for upcoming tournaments be posted here? Some people think posting it is the Server.war2.ru board is more appropriate and more likely to be seen.
  • Should past tournaments be archived here? I personally think it's redundant to start threads in one section and then move them to another for archival purposes only.
  • If announcements for actual tournaments aren't here, what's this section for? Discussion related to the procedure & logistics for self-hosting tournies, Ritalin's Challonge.com project, etc.?
  • Should this board remain under the Warcraft II category, or should "Tournaments & Leagues" be a separate category? Like e.g. "Help & Support". Currently individual leagues will be sub-boards, but if Tournies & Leagues becomes its own category, they could become top-level boards which might encourage more participation.

Some thoughts on the subject from different people:

I’d also like to propose adding a “Tournaments” section to the forum.  A board for tournament announcements and information would be great as well as links to the WarCraft II Challonge page and tournament host registration form.  These links would also be a nice replacement in the tournaments section on the website.  If we get Challonge embedded on the website we can just switch out the links later.

As for "Tournaments" section, i believe tournaments are highly related to server.war2.ru and should be posted in that section

Sounds OK.  It's a good idea at least for after the tourney is over, so that all the tourney history could be saved in one forum.  I'm not sure about active tourneys though, if they should go in there (would anyone read it?) or the server.war2.ru subforum.

I don't see why it'd be so hard for people interested in tournaments to identify & browse the board labeled "Tournaments". I would think that would give those threads more prominence and less chance to get buried under all the other posts that are made in the Server.war2.ru board.

The entire tourney board can be considered a WIP at this time and will be adapted based on the wishes of the community & whatever configuration is generally preferred. Share your thoughts!

Strategy & Replays / 16:9 stream vs 4:3
« on: March 31, 2015, 03:03:21 PM »
WC2 default aspect ratio is 4:3 but Twitch/YouTube video players are 16:9 so WC2 replays always have black bars on either side of the video, like so:

I was messing around with obs today and discovered how to stream at 16:9

That's what I see when playing, I don't mind it being stretched, how does it work as a replay though? Better than black bars?

Server.War2.ru / Share your favorite screenshots
« on: March 29, 2015, 08:44:10 AM »
Going to be featuring some screenshots on the home page of the website, and I'd like a variety that shows both races, different maps, land/sea/air, etc. Share any interesting ones you've taken over the years!

Upload here or to http://ss.war2.ru (prefer .pcx or .png format to avoid quality loss)

Mods & Development / Different color sprite sheets
« on: March 21, 2015, 11:32:38 AM »
Is it possible to get sprite sheets like this: http://www.spriters-resource.com/pc_computer/warcraft2/ for all eight colors? I'm specifically interested in the front facing peon but would like them all if they can be easily extracted somehow.

If anyone feels like taking a few screenshots of different colors manually in the map editor or something that'd be helpful too. Just like this:

Thanks guys!

Edit - Please no irrelevant garbage posts in a thread intended to accomplish something. You guys have plenty of other places to continue your post count war.
